Shelf Life: Mini Me

As collectors we sometimes find a casting or 2 that we really like and would not mind owning it in different scales. I somehow discovered that I have some large and small scales that are nearly identical so I am proudly displaying them.

Let’s start with the left one. Here is a 1/18 Toyota Land Cruiser by Triple 9 model. I found this at an online store called American Excellence online store located in North Carolina but has closed around 2022.

This mini me is a Johnny Lightning model bought years ago in Walgreen when they were still selling JL under Playing Mantis.

If you are into anime or manga and love cars this will be a familiar one for you. Even if you are not you might still fall in love with the Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno 3-door GT-Apex, a fifth generation Corolla driven by the character Takumi Fujiwara. Takumi is a student working part time in a gas station who also delivers Tofu for his father using the said car on Mount Amina. What no one knows at the start is that he is also good at drifting, a type of racing popular in Japan. Due to the popularity of the anime there were many companies that released this model. The larger one I have was released by Jada toys. It also included a die cast figurine of Takumi. There is no scale indicated and although most people refer to this as 1/24 I think this might be around 1/20.

The smaller one was released under the Tomica brand and the small Takumi figurine is by More Art and is made from die cast as well.

  • photo borrowed from wikimedia This black 1971 Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R is an official licensed model released by Jada Toys based on the car driven by Brian O’Conner’s character in the famous American movie ‘Fast Five’. Most people refer to this scale as 1/24 but I believe this is closer to 1/20.

The mini me version is from M2 Machines. Although not officially licensed as the car from the movie, it never the less look identical in therms of model and color.

Although not an official released for the anime, this Nissan Fairlady Z has some similarity to the Car known as Devil Z, a possessed car in the anime ‘Wangan Midnight’. The 1/24 is released by M2 Machines.

The mini me version was made by Tomica under their Premium series.

In conclusion it was a fun time to plan this display.
