Land of the Rising Sunday, Tomica Time, has returned. Today we examine Tomica 5-2, the Toyota Soarer 2800GT. This casting entered the range in September 1981, enjoying a long run until June 1992, and is a great example of period Tomica workmanship:
Tomica hit their stride by the late 70s, and castings from the that time into the mid 80s are a high point in terms of build quality and accurate detail. This model is no exception, containing significant amounts of both. This car, the ancestor to the Lexus SC, was also a quality item no doubt. Accurate fine line detail is apparent, proportion appears correct, and the gold button wheels catch the eye. This model features the springy suspension, crisp glazing, and snappy door action we enjoy in vintage Tomica. Scale is claimed to be 1:65, likely accurate, close to the standard of small scale. From all angles, one can imagine this luxury coupe cruising along a Japanese highway perhaps with Mt. Fuji in the distance:

Front and rear have plentiful detail:
The base is metal, which adds heft and contains ample detail along with identifying data:
A fun feature of this model is the sunroof. A rare feature for a small scale model of the era, the sunroof opens/slides:
This model is fortunate enough to live in its clean original box:
I'm more than pleased to have this casting in my collection, it is a little gem:
