Land of the Rising Sun-day, Tomica Time, has returned. Today we take a look at Tomica 55-6, the Toyota Crown Majesta. This casting entered the range in September 1992, remaining until December 2001, and is another one that is a bit of an oddity in my collection:
That being a model I bought new when current. In the mid 90s I noticed an ad for Tomica in a hobby magazine, and impulse bought a few even though I wasn't obsessively collecting at the time. For whatever reason this was one I picked, and have had it for ~30 years. This model of a first generation (S140) flagship variant of the Toyota Crown has a pleasing pearl white finish, while containing realistic fine line casting detail and accurate proportion. One may notice just a few small chips, I remember letting a young relative play with this car back in the day. One may also notice just a little superdetailing, as I did that to a few models at the time. This model has the crisp glazing, springy suspension, and snappy door action we admire in older Tomica. Scale is claimed to be 1:64, likely accurate, and exactly the standard of small scale. From all angles, one can imagine this this rounded bubble era cruiser out for a night on the town or a drive on the highway:
Doors open to reveal a detailed interior and accurate steering wheel:
Front and rear have ample detail, the rear light bar being its own clear plastic piece being a nice touch:
The base is metal, which adds heft and contains technical and identifying detail, this is also from the end of the run of Made in Japan mainline cars:
This model is lucky enough to live in its original box:
I'm more than happy to have this model in my collection, I've had it for decades now, and it is a quality piece:
