Tomica Time, Land of the Rising Sun-day, is here again. Today we examine Tomica 17-9, the Nissan March Police Car. This casting entered the range in September 2012, and is something pretty unusual compared to most of my material:
That being a modern casting. I generally do not collect modern material. It has been some time since I bought any kind of model at all, but unless a modern item is a fintail or something I specifically like, I stick to vintage. A friend of mine visited Japan and brought this back for me, the police theme being a good souvenir item and probably better he bought this than tried to find something vintage. This model differs from vintage castings in that the glazing is different from older models, there's no snappy door action as nothing opens, and the casting quality is somewhat softer - modern Tomica has a different ethos than the crisp realism of older models, some are more along the lines of a cute toy rather than a precise model. However, there is an interior (with the amusingly small steering wheel seen in other modern models) and the suspension does have some spring to it. Scale is claimed to be 1:58, likely accurate, a March is not a large car, yet this model feels chunky in hand. From all angles, one can imagine this diminutive patrol car on the beat in a digital metropolis, maybe not in pursuit, but keeping an eye on things no less:
Front and rear have detail, the mask painted lights are a trait of modern Tomica, and the police badge is a nice touch:
The base is plastic, and contains technical and identifying detail:
This model lives in its clean original box:
I'm happy to have this one, it is a fun souvenir and was a gift from a good friend:
