[REVIEW] Lesney Matchbox Volkswagen Caravette

Lesney Matchbox time is here again. Today we take a look at Lesney Matchbox 34b, the Volkswagen Caravette. This casting entered the range in 1962 (replacing a similar VW), remaining until 1967 (replaced by a similar VW), and represents something of an icon today:

The VW van, the T2, the transporter, the hippie mobile, the Sweet Pickles bus - whatever nickname one uses, everyone knows what these are. With a decades-long production run, these are known in much of the world and many view them with fondness. This model, something up vdubyajohn's alley, contains considerable fine line casting detail as typical for Matchbox models of the 60s, and also contains features such as glazing and interior, along with moving parts (opening doors) - a full featured model for the early 60s. The transparent roof panel also adds interest. Scale is likely around 1:60, probably close to the standard for small scale. From all angles, one can imagine this cheerful little van going out for an enjoyable weekend camping trip or to a festival:

Front and rear have a fine level of detail to match the rest of the model, with the silver trimmed VW logo being a nice touch:

Doors open to reveal interior features, including seating and a table:

The colored base contains maker and model data and shows off the grey plastic wheels:

This model is lucky enough to live its nice original Type C box, indicating production around 1962:

I'm lucky to have this model in my collection, as it shows well even with a little storage wear, and is hard to find in box. Pictured with an old dime for scale:

Thanks for posting the brochure, I now know that there is a fold up table on of the side doors. Could never figure out what those were. Great casting, the hinges on the engine cover kill me, that level of detail represented.
