Lesney Matchbox time has returned. Today we examine Lesney Matchbox 25b, the Volkswagen Beetle. This model entered the range in 1960, remaining until 1964, and is a real jewel of a model:

We all know what a Beetle is, this car needs no introduction. This Matchbox model of a Beetle is a real beauty, and features two big advancements that debuted around the time it entered the range - glazing and an opening part, very modern for the time. This model features accurate proportion - hard to do on something shaped like the Beetle and ample fine line casting detail. The color, perhaps simulating the period color "glacier blue" and paintwork are also excellent. I suspect scale is in the 1:60s, probably close to standard small scale. From all angles, one can imagine ubiquitous machine driving almost anywhere:

Front and rear have plenty of detail, making it obvious this is a Beetle from just after the oval rear window switched to a rectangle:

The base identifies the maker and model, and shows off the grey plastic wheels:

The engine compartment lid opens to show a cast engine, and remarkably well-cast at that, there's no mistaking this for anything but a period VW engine, extremely high quality modeling here, remarkable for something of its age, scale, and price point:

This model is fortunate to live its nice original Type B5 "New Model" box, indicating production in 1960:

I'm more than happy to have this model in my collection, this is a sought after model, and all variants command a premium. Pictured with an old dime for scale:

Beauty! "This model features accurate proportion..." In fact, the engine under that lid is almost life size...lol!
