Lesney Matchbox time is here again. Today as we work our way up the range again in number, we take a look at Lesney Matchbox 28b, the Bedford Low Loader. This model entered the range in 1959, remaining until 1964, and fits a theme:
That theme being commercial/industrial vehicles, as many were in this part of the range at this time. I don't want to call this a boring model, as it is a fine piece of casting skill, but there might not be a ton of play value here unless one has imagination - this one seems ready made for a model railroader etc. More passenger cars appear as one works their way up the number sequence. This model is again like several others of the period, being similar to the model it replaced - 28a was also a compressor truck, but a Bedford. This model being a little later shows the progression of casting quality - although still a hollow model, fine line casting detail is plentiful, and this is as much a model as a toy. I suspect scale is in the 1:60s, probably around the standard of small scale. From all angles, one can imagine this power generator lending a hand on the jobsite:
Front and rear have ample detail, with the mask painted silver grille areas at front and back being nice touches:
The underside contains model and maker identifying data, and this view shows the six black plastic wheels:
This model is lucky enough to live its nice original Type D1 box, making it no older than 1962:
I'm happy this model in my collection, this is a quality item in time warp condition. Pictured with an old dime for scale:
