[REVIEW] Lesney Matchbox Chevrolet Impala

Writer's picture: FintailFintail

Lesney Matchbox time is here again. Today we take a look at Lesney Matchbox 57b, the Chevrolet Impala. This casting entered the range in 1961, remaining until 1966, and is a perfect example of a model from an interesting time in the Matchbox lineup:

The period from roughly 1958-64 saw some unusual details in the 1-75 series. This is a time where some models gained different colored baseplates, there were multiple wheel styles, and two tone paint schemes. Some of the most valuable and sought-after castings of the Regular Wheel era come from this period, and the 57b Impala is one of these. This model of a 1959 Impala 2 door hardtop shows that ideal with its colored baseplate, silver wheels, and two tone paint. The car itself is also something of an icon, with its seagull or batwing fins showing the flamboyance of 1959 design. Fine line casting detail is easily visible, the model has accurate proportion, and has the modern feature of glazing. I suspect scale is in the upper 1:60s, maybe a little smaller than the standard of small scale, as this is a large real world vehicle, and was made to fit in a normal box. From all angles, one can this space age gem out on a new interstate or out on a Friday night cruise in town:

Front and rear views show ample detail, with detailed mask painted grille and fine detail at rear being nice touches, and the tow hook adds play value:

The brightly colored base contains maker and model data, and this view shows off the silver plastic wheels:

This model is lucky to live its original Type C box, indicating production in 1961-early 1962:

There must have been quite a clearance sale with this price:

I'm more than happy to have this model in my collection - this is a quality item and is sought after. Pictured with an old dime for scale:
