Back in 2017 a friend of mine who collected Star Trek figurines told me about a new model car being released.
That was a build-at-home-via-subscription model of the famous time machine from Back to the Future.
I started the model subscription. How it worked was, you'd sign up for the subscription and the publisher would ship you a few parts a month. Generally enough for 20-40 minutes time worth of parts to assemble.
I was hooked.
A few months in and several web searches later I found this 1:10 scale model of a Toyota 2000GT. This one was different because it was only available as a full kit. instead of receiving a handful of parts a month, you got a huge box with everything you'd need all at once.
I was several months in to my 30 months subscription to the time machine and super excited to have a full kit to work on.
I knocked this car out in about 3-months. Working on it in the evenings and on weekends. Officially speaking, it was the 3rd large-scale model I'd started. It was the first I completed though.
I was hooked. A new addiction was realized and I haven't stopped since.
I credit this car for kicking off my obsession with model building.
I'd assembled plastic model kits before. I was never satisfied with the finished product though; mostly due to my inability to get the paint to look as I wanted it to. Perhaps also a bit of impatience. I enjoy these diecast models because the finish is, well, finished. I have seen some impressive repaints from other builders though.
This Toyota is unique in my collection being my only 1:10 scale model car. I have many 1:18s (the most represented scale at my house outside of 1:64 diecast), two 1:12 model cars, and now seven one/eighth scale completed model cars; with two more in progress.
The fun of building a display-worthy diecast replica is worth the cost of admission to me, and the generally lengthy build-time.
I'm Hansen and I've had a passion for cars, both real and palm-sized, since before I could speak. I'm not the best photographer or model-maker, but I enjoy what I do and I enjoy sharing it with others.
Building a mega scale car is still on my to do list, I need to just do it
